語学の勉強を兼ねて。
これと云って奇巧のない、閑雅な、明るくひらいたお庭である。数珠を繰るような蝉の声がここを領している。
そのほかには何一つ音とてなく、寂寞を極めている。この庭には何もない。記憶もなければ何もないところへ、自分は来てしまったと本多は思った。
庭は夏の日ざかりの日を浴びてしんとしている。・・・・・
It is a gracious, bright garden with no special artifice. The place is full of the cries of cicada that sound as though many worshipers were telling their rosaries.
There is not a single sound otherwise in the extreme tranquility. There is nothing in the garden. I have come, Honda thought, to a place where there is no memory, nor anything else.
The garden is quiet in the full summer sun....
「The Decay of the Angel」（英語）
C'était un clair et paisible jardin, sans rien de bien particulier. Tel un rosaire qu'on roule entre les doigts. Y réignait le cri strident des cigales.
Pas d'autre bruit. Le jardin était vide. Il était venu, pensa Honda, en un lieu de nul souvenir, de néant.
Le plein soleil d'été s'épandait sur la paix du jardin.
「L’ange en décomposition」（フランス語）
英訳は現在形ですが、仏語訳は「半過去」*1という時制になっています。
気になって日本語原文をさかのぼると、地の文は基本的に過去形で、臨場感を高めるときに主観表現で現在形にしている感じ。
最後の場面は、語り手もろとも無に置き去りにされるので、何としても現在形でないと・・・と思うのですが、そうもいかないのでしょうか。
